Squad List: Benfica x Vitória de Guimarães

Rui Vitória has named a 21-man squad for Benfica's 2017/18 curtain raiser: the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.

Bruno Varela is expected to start with Júlio César unable to recover from a left leg injury. Andrija Zivković (right thigh), André Carrillo (right knee), André Horta (left knee) and Kostas Mitroglou (left thigh) are also unavailable. Filip Krovinović is still rebuilding his fitness after hernia surgery.

Vitória has included just six defenders in his preliminary squad, dropping Pereira, Buta, Dias, Kalaica and Hermes. Andreas Samaris is serving the first of a four-match suspension.

Saturday's game at the Estádio Municipal de Aveiro kicks off at 20:45 local time, and will be officiated by Artur Soares Dias.

33 players will take part in Benfica's preseason training camp in England. The squad will practise at St. George's Park, training base of England's national teams, from Monday to Friday, before competing in the Emirates Cup at the weekend.

Grimaldo, Pizzi and Raúl are included after returning from their summer vacations. André Almeida (thigh), Krovinović (hernia) and Salvio (ankle) have recovered from their respective injuries.

Fejsa, Zivković and Carrillo will arrive a day late due to visa issues. Arango has been dropped and is expected to be loaned out to Aves, Rio Ave or Chaves.

The Eagles face Arsenal on Saturday at 16:20 (UK/Portuguese time) and RB Leipzig on Sunday at 14:00. Both matches will be played at the Emirates Stadium.

Rui Vitória has selected 28 players to participate in the Algarve Cup. André Almeida is unavailable with a bruised right thigh, and is replaced by Benfica B right-back Aurélio Buta.

Luisão is fit again after recovering from a knee injury. Eliseu, Samaris, Zivković, João Carvalho and Mitroglou return after extended summer vacations, but Grimaldo, Raúl and Pizzi are still on holiday. Ferro, Pêpê and Heriberto have all rejoined Benfica B. Salvio (ankle) and Krovinović (hernia) remain sidelined.

Benfica face Real Betis on Thursday and Hull City on Saturday. Both games will take place at the Estádio do Algarve at 20:30 local time.

Rui Vitória has named a 25-man squad to participate in the Uhren Cup in Switzerland. Luisão has been ruled out with a knee complaint, while summer signing Filip Krovinović is still recovering from hernia surgery. Eduardo Salvio has a sprained right ankle.

Recent arrivals Martin Chrien, Haris Seferović, Chris Willock, Cristian Arango and Bruno Varela go straight into the squad. Vitória has also handed opportunities to Benfica B regulars Branimir Kalaica, Rúben Dias, Ferro, Pêpê, Heriberto and Diogo Gonçalves.

Mitroglou, Grimaldo, Samaris, Zivković, João Carvalho, Pizzi, Nélson Semedo, Eliseu and Raúl have yet to return from their summer holidays.

The Eagles take on Neuchâtel Xamax at 19:00 (UK/Portuguese time) on Thursday at the Stadion Brühl, and Young Boys at 16:00 on Saturday at the Tissot Arena.

Benfica confirmed in Emirates Cup 2017

London club Arsenal have invited Benfica to the pre-season tournament at the Emirates Stadium in late July 2017.

Together with the Portuguese Champions, La Liga side Sevilla (ESP) and Bundesliga surprise package RB Leipzig (GER) are the remaining teams in the ninth edition of the Emirates Cup.

Four games will be played across the weekend of 29th July and 30th July, with kick-off times scheduled for 14:00 BST and 16:20 BST each day. 

Benfica and Santos pay homage to Léo

On Saturday afternoon, SL Benfica and Santos FC took to the field to contest a friendly in São Paulo, Brazil. The fixture was a testimonial match to honour retired full-back Leonardo Lourenço Bastos, otherwise known as Léo. The 41-year old, who is now retired, spent most of his career playing for Benfica and Santos.

Benfica have named an 18-man squad for their friendly with Santos in Brazil this Saturday. The game will serve as a testimonial for retired left-back Léo, who played for both sides. It will also commemorate the centenary of Santos' stadium, the Estádio Vila Belmiro.

With a number of senior players away on international duty, Rui Vitória has selected no less than seven B team regulars. Danilo should also make his long-awaited return from injury.

The action gets underway at 20:05 UK and Portuguese time.

Benfica lift the Supertaça: Player and staff reactions

Benfica began the 2016/17 season in the best possible manner by winning the Supertaça in Aveiro on Sunday night. An early goal from debutant Franco Cervi set the Eagles on their way, before Jonas and Pizzi sealed the result in the closing stages. The match was a lot closer than the scoreline might suggest, and Braga played their part in a high tempo, end-to-end encounter. After the game, Rui Vitória and his players shared their thoughts on the victory.

Benfica get their season underway on Sunday night at the Estádio Municipal de Aveiro, where they will dispute the Supertaça with last season's Taça de Portugal winners Braga. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Rui Vitória revealed that his players are raring to go.

"According to plan, we arrive prepared for this game. It is the first official game that gives a trophy which we want to win. The players (have shown) really great commitment and determination for this game. It was a very good week, which bodes well."

Ederson is still recovering from knee surgery, and Jardel has been ruled out by a thigh injury. André Almeida is absent with a broken nose. Eliseu has been overlooked after missing much of preseason due to his involvement at Euro 2016.

Loan signing Danilo is unavailable as his registration was not completed in time. Andrija Živković (right leg) and Rui Fonte (right knee) remain sidelined.
