Nuno Santos heading to the Olympic Games

Portugal under-21 and under-23 coach Rui Jorge revealed his Olympic squad this afternoon at the Cidade do Futebol in Oeiras. The ex-Sporting defender will take 18 players to Brazil this summer, including Benfica’s Nuno Santos, currently on loan at Vitória de Setúbal. Goalkeeper Bruno Varela, who left Benfica this summer, has also made the cut. One mystery player has yet to be named.




International Roundup: Euro 2016 and Copa América Wrap

Renato, Eliseu and the rest of the Portugal squad arrived in Lisbon to a rapturous reception on Monday, after winning Euro 2016. They weren't the only Benfica players in international action this summer, although Lindelöf, Jonas, Raúl and Gaitán were decidedly less successful.

Renato Sanches may have played his last game for Benfica, but he still had some work to do this summer before heading to Bayern Munich. The 18-year old capped his stunning breakthrough season by lifting the Euro 2016 trophy with Portugal, as Fernando Santos' side edged past France in a tense final at the Stade de France. He was also named young player of the tournament after a string of mature performances.
