Vitória unconcerned by fixture congestion

Rui Vitória

Same opponents, same stadium, different competition. On Tuesday night, Benfica return to the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques to face Vitória de Guimarães for the second time in the space of four days. This time, the prize at stake is a place in the semi-finals of the Taça CTT. The northerners need a win to progress, while a draw would suffice for Benfica.

Vitória calls on supporters to continue their backing

After a record-breaking 2016, Benfica begin their New Year with a League Cup game against Segunda Liga outfit Vizela. The northern side, managed by former FC Porto assistant coach Rui Quinta, currently occupy eleventh place in the Liga Ledman Pro. Vitória de Guimarães required an injury time winner to overcome Vizela in their Group D opener last week, so Rui Vitória is expecting no easy task on Tuesday night.

Match Report: Benfica 1 - 0 Paços de Ferreira

Benfica have participated in every edition of the Portuguese League Cup since the competition was launched in 2007/08, lifting the trophy on seven out of nine occasions. The Eagles began their latest campaign on Thursday 29th December, in their last match of 2016. Benfica hosted Paços de Ferreira at the Estádio da Luz in the opening match of Group D.

Vitória: "We ended the year with a fantastic record"

Benfica ended 2016 with a narrow 1-0 win over Paços de Ferreira in the Taça CTT. The football was not spectacular, but the result was nonetheless significant, enabling the Eagles to equal Porto’s Portuguese record of 44 competitive wins in a calendar year. It also brought them level with Barcelona as the European team with the most victories in 2016, and gave them the highest win percentage in Europe for the calendar year (81.5%), eclipsing Juventus (78.4%), Shakhtar Donetsk (75.5%) and Barcelona (74.6%).
