Squad List: Benfica x Vizela

Rui Vitória has named a heavily rotated squad for tonight’s League Cup clash with second division Vizela. Branimir Kalaica, Yuri Ribeiro and Luka Jović have been promoted from the B squad, while Luisão, Victor Lindelöf, Ljubomir Fejsa and Franco Cervi have all been rested.

Júlio César (shoulder), Eliseu (thigh), Álex Grimaldo (abdomen), Eduardo Salvio (shoulder) and Raúl Jiménez (groin) are currently unavailable through injury. Pizzi returns after serving his one-match suspension, and Danilo gets a rare call-up.

The game at the Estádio da Luz begins at 19:15 local time.

Vitória calls on supporters to continue their backing

After a record-breaking 2016, Benfica begin their New Year with a League Cup game against Segunda Liga outfit Vizela. The northern side, managed by former FC Porto assistant coach Rui Quinta, currently occupy eleventh place in the Liga Ledman Pro. Vitória de Guimarães required an injury time winner to overcome Vizela in their Group D opener last week, so Rui Vitória is expecting no easy task on Tuesday night.

Benfica have participated in every edition of the Portuguese League Cup since the competition was launched in 2007/08, lifting the trophy on seven out of nine occasions. The Eagles began their latest campaign on Thursday 29th December, in their last match of 2016. Benfica hosted Paços de Ferreira at the Estádio da Luz in the opening match of Group D.

Benfica ended 2016 with a narrow 1-0 win over Paços de Ferreira in the Taça CTT. The football was not spectacular, but the result was nonetheless significant, enabling the Eagles to equal Porto’s Portuguese record of 44 competitive wins in a calendar year. It also brought them level with Barcelona as the European team with the most victories in 2016, and gave them the highest win percentage in Europe for the calendar year (81.5%), eclipsing Juventus (78.4%), Shakhtar Donetsk (75.5%) and Barcelona (74.6%).

Vitória will not rotate for rotation's sake

Benfica begin their League Cup campaign tonight at the Estádio da Luz, in what is their final fixture of the calendar year. The Eagles will contest Group D with Thursday’s opponents, Paços de Ferreira, along with Vitória de Guimarães and second division Vizela.

Benfica retain League Cup: Player and staff reactions

Benfica ended the season in style on Friday night, putting Marítimo to the sword in the League Cup Final in Coimbra. Jonas, Mitroglou (2), Gaitán, Jardel and Raúl Jiménez all found the net as Benfica put six past the Madeiran side for the second time this season. Luisão lifted the club's second major trophy in the space of a week, and afterwards, Rui Vitória and his players shared their emotions with BTV.




Vitória targeting “beautiful” end to the season

On Friday, Benfica take to the field for the final time this season, as they go head-to-head with Marítimo in the League cup final. In his pre-match interview at the Estádio da Luz, Rui Vitória confirmed that lifting the trophy would be the perfect finale to the current campaign.

“It’s a final, and whenever this word comes up, the focus has to be even greater. It’s a final that has everything we want: harmony and a party. But it’s a final that we want to win. Whoever represents this club, whoever has made the journey that we have made, wants a beautiful end to the season.”




Squad List: Marítimo x Benfica (League Cup Final)

After Benfica secured their third consecutive League title on Sunday, Rui Vitória has selected every available player for the short trip north to Coimbra to face Marítimo in Friday's League Cup Final (Taça CTT).

Júlio César and Nuno Santos remain sidelined due to injury.

To reach the final, Benfica defeated Moreirense, Nacional and Oriental Lisboa in the Group stage, before beating Braga in the semi-final. The final kicks off at 19:45 BST at the Estádio Cidade de Coimbra.
