Vitória highlights Marítimo's defensive unity

Maritimo

Benfica welcome Marítimo to the Estádio da Luz on Saturday night for the fourth round of the Portuguese Cup. The Madeiran side are having a decent season under new coach Daniel Ramos. They have the third best defensive record in the Liga NOS this term, as Rui Vitória alluded to in his pre-match press conference.

Vitória wants more from his fringe players

Following Benfica’s challenging victory over 1.º Dezembro in the third round of the Portuguese Cup, head coach Rui Vitória conceded that his side’s performance was not up to expectations, but praised the attitude of their Sintra-based opponents.

Luisão: "We had the humility to fight for the 90 minutes"

Benfica kicked off their Portuguese Cup campaign on Friday evening with a difficult 2-1 win over Sociedade União 1º de Dezembro, thanks to a last minute header from Luisão. The Eagles took the lead in the 50th minute after Lisandro López found Danilo on the edge of the area, and the Brazilian darted past the defence, finishing with a low strike to the left corner.

Vitória: "Benfica enter every competition to win"

Rui Vitoria

Benfica begin their Portuguese Cup campaign tonight against Sociedade União 1º de Dezembro. The Eagles' opponents hail from Sintra, but their stadium can only accommodate 1,000 spectators and has an artificial pitch, so the game will be played in Estoril.

Squad List: SU 1° de Dezembro x Benfica

Rui Vitória has called up 20 players for the 3rd round of the Taça de Portugal versus Sociedade União 1° de Dezembro.

Still out with injury are Júlio César (acute lower back pain), Jonas (hematoma of the right foot), Jardel (muscle strain in the back of the left thigh), Raúl Jiménez (left knee sprain with internal lateral ligament injury), Andreas Samaris (left ankle sprain), Rafa Silva and André Horta (both have a muscle strain in the back of the right thigh).

The game will be played tomorrow, Friday 14th October, at 20:15 at the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota in Estoril.

Vitória attacks refereeing decisions

Following Benfica’s Portuguese Cup defeat to Sporting – their third consecutive loss against their bitter rivals – head coach Rui Vitória argued that refereeing blunders had cost his side the game.

“I will start at the end and say that there was a stone-wall penalty. I have to react, because in three games with Sporting we’ve had three big penalty shouts and none given.  This has to stop!”
