Benfica have completed the signing of Brazilian left-back Marcelo Hermes. The 22-year old joins on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract with Grêmio. The full-back has agreed a contract until 2021 and will wear the number 38 jersey. You can read more about the player's credentials here.

Hermes will provide competition to Álex Grimaldo, Eliseu and Yuri Ribeiro for the left-back slot. The new arrival has not played a competitive match since June 2016, so he is unlikely to be an immediate starter. Hermes scored two goals in 34 appearances for Grêmio.

In declarations to BTV, the defender revealed his delight at sealing his switch to the Estádio da Luz.

"I'm very happy to be at this great club and I'm one more (player) to help Benfica win many titles."

"Benfica are a great club. Every player dreams of playing in Europe. To play at Benfica, a club that are triple league champions, is a dream fulfilled."

"I hope to have a good career at Benfica. I want to help the club and my teammates. I came (here) to work (hard) and help to win various titles."

Hermes has yet to meet the rest of the squad, but believes that the presence of compatriots Luisão, Jardel, Jonas, Danilo, Ederson and Júlio César will help him to settle in the Portuguese capital.

"I've still not had the opportunity to talk with my (new) teammates. I watched the game with Vizela, but I didn't manage to talk with anyone."

"I think that I will adapt with ease, because everyone has received me well, and the squad has several Brazilians."
