Benfica began the 2016/17 season in the best possible manner by winning the Supertaça in Aveiro on Sunday night. An early goal from debutant Franco Cervi set the Eagles on their way, before Jonas and Pizzi sealed the result in the closing stages. The match was a lot closer than the scoreline might suggest, and Braga played their part in a high tempo, end-to-end encounter. After the game, Rui Vitória and his players shared their thoughts on the victory.

Rui Vitória (Head coach)

“It was important to start well, above all to honour those who have left (the club) that helped us to get here. We started winning a difficult game (that was) tightly contested. We had control of the game during the first 30 minutes, when we should have resolved (things). The players deserve congratulation.”

“Every game is a Final for us. Now we will think about Tondela and we will try to win, game by game.”

Luisão (Captain)

“All the credit goes to Benfica, for everything that was done last season. This title is also for the players that have left. We controlled the game. Benfica have a ‘mighty flame’ and will always go after winning titles.”

“We are part of a whole, and regardless of who leaves, we continue to work with cohesion.”

“We will try to win all of the competitions that we will contest. I’m happy with another goal and another title!”

Júlio César

“It is important to start the season by winning. We have a responsibility to always try to win new titles.”

Victor Lindelöf

“I’m very happy! This is the first title of the season!”

Raúl Jiménez

“I always work to be named (in the starting eleven), but the decision is the coach’s. We had a good preseason and now we want to begin the league on the right foot.”

“The most important (thing) was to win another competition. We played a good game against an excellent team. We were superior and deserved the victory and the Supertaça!”
