Today was the perfect opportunity to catch up with rivals Sporting B ahead of Sunday’s derby -16:00 BST in Seixal-, in a game which should have easily been at Benfica’s grasp. Marítimo B had just come out from a long winning draught - having lost 5 of their last games and drawn 1 -, sitting at the bottom of the table, second last.
Unfortunately, despite a strong initial line up, Benfica were unable to cancel the Madeirans’ offensive power and depth. Marítimo installed themselves in the Encarnados’ half and created most of the occasions. At the 34th minute, after a clever pass, Pana isolated himself in front of keeper Bruno Varela to give the lead to the home team. The score remained 1-0 at half time.
During the second time, the game’s tendency carried its course, with a more domineering and imposing Marítimo. At the 65th minute, Dawidowicz committed a foul in the penalty area, giving the opponents the chance to increase their lead. Filipe Oliveira swept the penalty kick past Varela for the 2-0.
Despite Hélder Cristovão’s substitutions, Benfica remained powerless in creating any danger, leaving the score at a disappointing 2-0. Marítimo’s tricky 3 next fixtures (Braga B, Sporting B and Porto B) mean they are unlikely to add any further victory this season, whilst Benfica could climb up the table if they crush the lions on Sunday.
