The second semi-final match of the 2016/17 Portuguese League Cup finished with a surprising 3-1 victory for Moreirense at the Estádio Algarve, with the Northern minnows beating Benfica for the first time in their history to reach the final of the competition. The Encarnados reached half-time with a 1-0 lead but had a disastrous second half, conceding three goals and hitting the post on a couple of occasions in the pouring rain.
After the rare defeat, head coach Rui Vitória lamented his team's poor finishing in the first half and their lack of concentration in the second.
"I think our team did enough to win, but in football if you fail to finish your chances you can lose, and this is what happened today. Congratulations to Moreirense... we had a good first half but failed to score more goals."
"After half-time we didn't have the best start and found ourselves needing to score to come back into the game, but we failed to finish the several chances we had. Sometimes you get one of these days and it's important to learn from our mistakes."
"We have reached many important stages of different competitions and this match shows that we need to display even more concentration and focus."
"We should now analyse what went wrong and try to correct this so we can avoid similar occurrences in the future."
Midfielder Pizzi also gave his reaction to the unexpected result:
"The game didn't go according to plan... we should have scored more goals in the first half. In the second half we started on the wrong foot and also failed to finish the chances we had."
"Despite having failed to reach the final of this competition, the group knows that our goal is to win every match."
"Unfortunately this wasn't possible today, mainly because we were unlucky with our finishing."
The League Cup final will be played this Sunday at the Estádio Algarve, in a Minho derby that sees SC Braga take on neighbours Moreirense. SL Benfica are back in Liga NOS action at 20:00 on Monday, away to Vitória Futebol Clube (Vitória de Setúbal).
