January transfer window departures: Part I

João Carvalho

Besides the lucrative sales of Gonçalo Guedes and Hélder Costa, the signings of Filipe Augusto and Pedro Pereira, and the departure of Adel Taarabt to Genoa, there was plenty more transfer activity at Benfica during January. The majority of these transactions were outgoing loan deals. In the first of this two-part feature, we look at the Portuguese players that have found new clubs.

Profiling the three Portuguese starlets that could succeed Ederson

André Moreira

Ederson continues to impress in a Benfica shirt, and despite renewing his contract last month, it would be no surprise if he were to move on in the summer. Manchester City may be at the front of the queue to secure his services; they are in dire need of a new goalkeeper, and Pep Guardiola is clearly a fan of ball-playing goalkeepers, of which the Brazilian is certainly one. If the 23-year old departs before the start of next season, who is likely to replace him?

Jonas: "This is a boost for my confidence levels"

Benfica got back to winning ways in the Liga NOS on Sunday evening, delivering an authoritative display to beat Nacional 3-0 at the Estádio da Luz. Fans' favourite Jonas managed to get his name on the scoresheet twice in the first half, while Kostas Mitroglou added a late third. The Brazilian was awarded the man-of-the-match prize, much to his satisfaction.

Benfica take on Nacional on Sunday, needing a win to reclaim top spot in the Liga NOS. They will have to do so without Álex Grimaldo (abdomen), Lisandro López (leg & knee), and Raúl Jiménez (ankle).

New signing Filipe Augusto goes straight into the squad, and Eduardo Salvio has recovered after his ankle sprain. Pizzi is alleged to be suffering from muscle fatigue, but has nonetheless been included. Marcelo Hermes drops out of the squad, while André Horta is still rebuilding his fitness.

Sunday's game at the Estádio da Luz kicks off at 18:00 local time.

Filipe Augusto aiming to seize his opportunity at Benfica

Filipe Augusto

Pedro Pereira was not Benfica's only signing on the final day of the January transfer window. The Eagles also recruited Filipe Augusto from Rio Ave, for an undisclosed fee. Like Pereira, Augusto has agreed a five-and-a-half year deal, which expires in summer 2022. The 23-year old midfielder is a client of Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes. He has been handed the number 6 shirt.

Pedro Pereira happy to complete his homecoming

Pedro Pereira

Benfica have strengthened their defence with the capture of Sampdoria right-back Pedro Pereira. The 19-year old returns to his former club after a season-and-a-half in Italy. Serbian midfielder Filip Đuričić has moved in the opposite direction as part of the transfer, turning his loan into a permanent deal. The Eagles are thought to have parted with €3 million plus Đuričić to bring Pereira back home. He will wear the number 23 jersey.
